Four classic formulas
Robinson: men 52 + 1.9X · women 49 + 1.7X
Miller: men 56.2 + 1.41X · women 53.1 + 1.36X
Devine: men 50 + 2.3X · women 45.5 + 2.3X
Hamwi: men 48 + 2.7X · women 45.5 + 2.2X
Healthy BMI range: 18.5 to 25 × height (m)²
These equations were written for clinical purposes — drug dosing, ventilator settings, nutrition support — not for aesthetics. That is why they disagree with each other by several kilograms and why the sensible way to read them is as a band rather than a single target. The Devine equation is the oldest and the most widely used in medicine; Robinson and Miller were later attempts to fit real population data more closely.
A better way to think about it
None of these formulas know your frame size, bone density or how much muscle you carry, and none of them use age. If you lift regularly you will often sit above every one of them while being visibly lean. Use the healthy BMI range as the outer boundary, then let waist measurement and body fat percentage decide what your personal target should be inside it.
