How the tape test works
Women: %fat = 163.205·log10(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684·log10(height) − 78.387
All circumferences in inches. Results are rounded to the nearest whole percent.
The circumference method was adopted because it needs nothing more than a tape measure and can be run on thousands of soldiers quickly. Men are measured at the neck and abdomen; women add the hip. Each site is taken three times and averaged, with the tape level and snug against the skin but not compressing it.
Read this before you rely on it
This tool reproduces the widely published circumference standards for reference and self-checking. Official screening procedures, measurement protocols and allowable limits are set by the relevant service and are revised periodically, so an unofficial estimate should never be treated as an official result. Very muscular necks or a naturally broad frame can push the estimate higher than a laboratory measurement would.
