Body surface area is the total external area of the body, and it turns out to scale with metabolic rate, blood volume and drug clearance far better than weight alone. That is why hospitals use it to dose chemotherapy, calculate cardiac index and set fluid requirements for burns. The Mosteller equation is the most commonly used in practice simply because it is easy to do on a calculator with a square root key.
Typical values
An average adult sits at roughly 1.7 square metres, which is why cardiac output and estimated GFR are both normalised to 1.73 m². The formulas agree within a few percent across normal body sizes and drift apart at the extremes of height and weight, which is why paediatric and bariatric care often specify which equation to use.
