Mass Gainers: Who Actually Needs Them and How to Use Them

A calorie tool for people who struggle to eat enough, and a fast way to gain fat for everyone else.

A mass gainer is a bag of calories with a protein base. That makes it genuinely useful for a small group of people who cannot eat enough, and an expensive way to add body fat for everyone else. The difference is entirely in how you use it.

Key takeaways

  • Gainers are useful if you are underweight, very active, or have a small appetite.
  • A full serving can carry 1,000 or more calories, which is often too much in one go.
  • Half servings alongside meals work better than a giant shake that kills your appetite.
  • A homemade shake with oats, milk, banana and whey is usually cheaper and higher quality.
  • Aim for around 0.25 to 0.5 percent of body weight gained per week to limit fat gain.

What is inside a gainer

Most gainers are 60 to 80 percent carbohydrate, usually maltodextrin or oat flour, with 20 to 50 g of protein per serving and a small amount of fat. Some add creatine, vitamins or digestive enzymes. The headline is always the calorie number, which can range from 400 to well over 1,200 per serving.

That carbohydrate base is not a bad thing. Carbohydrate fuels training and is easy to drink when eating feels like work. It only becomes a problem when the calories arrive on top of an already adequate diet.

Who genuinely benefits

The clearest candidates are naturally lean people who feel full quickly, teenagers and young adults still growing while training hard, athletes with very high training loads, and anyone recovering from illness or a period of weight loss. Shift workers who miss meals are another group.

If you are already gaining weight steadily on food alone, or you carry more body fat than you would like, a gainer is the wrong tool. Add a normal protein shake and one extra meal instead.

How to use one without getting fat

Start with half a serving, once a day, and place it between meals or straight after training rather than instead of a meal. Track body weight weekly and aim for a gain of roughly 0.25 to 0.5 percent of your body weight per week; for an 80 kg trainee that is about 200 to 400 g.

If the scale climbs faster than that, most of the extra is fat. Cut the serving in half again, or drop it on rest days. Gaining slowly is the whole trick: it gives muscle time to catch up with the calories.

  • Start at half a serving
  • Between meals, not instead of them
  • Target 0.25-0.5% body weight gain per week

The homemade alternative

A blender, 80 g of oats, 500 ml of milk, a banana, a spoon of peanut butter and one scoop of whey gives you roughly 800 calories with 45 g of protein, real fibre and micronutrients. It usually costs less per serving than a commercial gainer and you control the sugar.

Keep dates, laban and nuts as fallback calories when you are travelling. Liquid calories are the easiest way to eat more without feeling stuffed, and they do not need to come in a five kilogram bag.

Common mistakes

Drinking a full 1,200 calorie serving before dinner kills your appetite and replaces real food with sugar. Using a gainer while doing very little training builds fat, not muscle. And chasing the highest calorie number on the shelf usually means the lowest protein percentage.

Read the label for protein per serving relative to calories. A gainer with 50 g of protein in a 1,000 calorie serving is a food product; one with 20 g of protein in the same calories is mostly sugar.

Frequently asked questions

Are mass gainers just sugar?

Many are carbohydrate heavy, but quality varies. Compare protein per 1,000 calories and check whether the carbohydrate comes from oats or plain maltodextrin.

Can I take a gainer instead of dinner?

It is better as an addition. Replacing meals with liquid calories reduces fibre, micronutrients and the fullness that keeps appetite steady.

Will a gainer make me fat?

It can if the rate of weight gain is too fast. Track weekly weight and adjust the serving to stay near half a percent per week.

Do I still need creatine with a gainer?

Check the label. If it provides less than 3 g of creatine per serving, add a separate daily dose.
