A twenty to thirty minute early-afternoon nap recovers a measurable portion of lost alertness and performance without harming night sleep, provided it ends before about four in the afternoon. And prioritising sleep in the two nights before a hard session or competition captures most of the benefit, since the effects of sleep debt are cumulative rather than instant. This is triage, not a substitute for a workable routine.

A Routine That Works in This Climate

Managing life stress matters more than most people admit, because psychological stress and training stress draw on the same recovery budget.

Cold water immersion reduces soreness but may blunt some of the muscle-building adaptations if used routinely after strength training, so save it for competition days or heat management rather than as a habit. Stretching feels good and improves flexibility but does not accelerate recovery. Compression garments have small effects. None of these belong ahead of the basics, and any recovery plan that involves five gadgets but six hours of sleep has its priorities inverted.
